Concert Room
The Concert Room was designed by Charles Cockerell and is considered to be his finest interior. A magnificent circular room in cream and gold, half embedded in the main building and the other half projecting externally as an apse. The artistry is truly staggering.
Charles Dickens gave many readings on the stage as he considered it a perfect venue. Ravenhead glass mirrors situated at the back of the stage between grand columns help to create stunning reflections. It was originally designed to accommodate an orchestra with excellent acoustics due to the panelling fixed free of the walls, which acts as a sounding board.
This interior has been described as ‘perhaps the finest example of early Victorian interior design.’ The Concert room also benefits from the Halls revolutionary air-conditioning throughout the building designed by Dr David Boswell Reid in collaboration with Elmes.
The Concert Room was refurbished in 2006, and is now the crowning glory of the Hall and very popular with event organisers and visitors.
